In case you don't recall, in 2019, during the first Trump administration, the United States attempted to call into play Canada's extradition treaty with the United States, and have us become a party to the extradition of Chinese National Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei.
She was to be charged for allegedly attempting to do business with Iran, who was at the time under an (illegal) embargo by the United States, thanks to a bill passed in the United States by President Obama, and not as part of the effort of their nuclear weapons program, but in order to damage their growing economy.
Around that time, I made an extreme effort to look into this and even conducted some research in order to address this issue with our own Prime Minister at the time, Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau.
Here is a copy of the letter that I wrote to Prime Minister Trudeau back then, just in case my or Canada's commitment to our world partners ever comes into question. That even a "lowly" and often tormented citizen like myself can help to make a difference with insight and encouragement.
I never really touted how much effort I put into defending my allies and friendships, at home or around the world, but I certainly felt it every single time I was betrayed or backstabbed by the very people I defended.
I am glad to say that has not been the case with at least some people for whom I've gone to bat, despite the apparent infamy of being associated with my person, and the constant attempt to take my dignity and even my identity from me.
Still, I maintained my efforts, and this particular case is just one instance of many times I have gone to bat where it involved major issues about which I am very passionate.
When the Tsunami struck Japan back in 2011, for three months I gave half of everything I earned and that was at a time when my living conditions were very lacking (even more lacking than currently though I'm very grateful to have a roof over my head). Needless to say, the money I donated over that time added up to become quite a bit, but I rarely if ever mentioned it and certainly never guilt-tripped anyone over it.
Its unfortunate, but when you do such things, and there are people keeping an eye on you, they'll often do everything and anything to take that from you and wear it as their own unfortunately. Maybe taking it from me to give to the credit of John Penny, a friend of mine associated with a certain Japanese woman from the 1990s, whom apparently owns Japanese culture, because every time I associate with Japan, I'm accused of stealing his identity.
When in betrayal you are harmed by the very ones you protected, I cannot tell you how painful that is. Nonetheless, when it happens often enough, I just cut ties and that's not a bluff nor is it intended as a threat at all to anyone.
Here is a copy of my letter to Prime Minister Trudeau, directly from my email sent folder in which I predict much of what we're currently experiencing.

Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,
I am writing to you personally as a citizen of Canada in all truth and sincerity in hopes that you will personally take action with regard to the case of Huawei Executive Meng Wanzhou, who is scheduled to be extradited the United States to be tried on charges of fraud in its dealings with the Government of Iran in violation of US Sanctions. These new sanctions were imposed after the collapse of the 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal. These sanctions are strictly those of the United States and are not formalized by the member nations who agreed upon the preceding 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal (US, UK, France, China, Russia and Germany).
A time line of the press releases regarding these new US only sanctions can be read here at:
https://2009-2017.state.gov/e/eb/tfs/spi/iran/fs/index.htm
(Note that at some time between when I wrote this letter and now, the original document in the Whitehouse had been edited - which I eventually found under this possibly altered document)
I speculate that the charges against Meng Wanzhou are the result of investigative actions conducted by the Iran Action Group and likely include pressures with regard to the trade war (which followed shortly thereafter) and the formalization of agreements around the building of the new 5G infrastructure so as to exclude Chinese and possibly Russian corporations from taking part in this new infrastructure. This is a belief which I share with those of Economist Jeffrey Sachs (never having read his assertions this subject until this very day). They can be found in this article in Maclean's.
What is likely about to occur will lead to a Cold War and imbalance of world power with regard to the intelligence gathering capabilities that technologies like 5G offer to countries around the world in terms of both Open Source Intelligence and the collection of private data.
Much like the Cold War of the Nuclear Era that pit NATO and Warsaw Pact forces against one another, this new Cold War will involve a balance of global power that is hinged around whom has access to and control of the greatest Big Data and Open Source Intelligence gathering technologies of the world, namely 5G. If that balance is broken and one sided, it would be akin to either NATO or the Warsaw Pact having outnumbered the deployable nuclear capable arsenal of the other side, possibly leading to a first strike capability and global war.
The 5G infrastructure should include cooperation and input from every country taking part in its construction because all will be certain to use it for the purposes of intelligence gathering against foreign powers. If that balance is not kept, it could result in severe consequences for the stability of peace in the world.
These statements are not an assault against the country of the United States itself who have long been our allies through many rough periods throughout history, but for your consideration in our country's dealings with the Trump Administration as some of the recent actions taken by the Administration threaten to destabilize the progress we've made towards global peace and prosperity. The extradition of Meng Wanzhou is one such step towards destabilization.
The crime here is that Canada was used to secure a bargaining chip in its trade war with China by the Trump Administration who misused our prior extradition treaty to do so and to put us in the difficult position that has put so many Canadians in China and Chinese in Canada at risk as a result of these rising tensions. Think back to our relationship with China just a couple of weeks prior to the extradition request by the US Department Of Justice and perhaps you'll see for yourself that the request was misused by the Trump Administration to gain bargaining chips for which Canada would pay the price. There are many Americans who agree that the extradition process was misused by the Trump Administration.
This does not excuse China for its response by arresting Canadians abroad in China, but perhaps that should be taken as an indication as to how much China cares for its citizens abroad and just how violated China had felt for what likely appeared a betrayal by Canada, despite the fact that it is part of our obligation to honour treaties to which we are bound. We have much in common with China when it comes to the protection of our citizens. Please take my letter into consideration with regard to this situation.
Sincerely,
Brian Joseph Johns
