Editorial: Election 2019 by Brian Joseph Johns

Hi again fellow readers, writers, dreamers and voters!

In Canada today is the day that we do our civic duty and select a leader both locally and federally to represent us in the House Of Commons and the lead our country through representation of the people.

I did my civic duty and voted at 8:15 PM and it was a quick and pleasant experience thanks to the wonderful volunteers working to make sure that the elections go smoothly for everyone. They were polite, informative and in good spirits as well. It always feels good when you can go out into society without the fear of social abuse, especially when it comes to things like the election.

I wonder how it must have felt for the women who have been fighting for their freedom to vote (Universal Suffrage) for a long time. Despite Canada's efforts Nato forces to bring down the Taliban and Hamid Karzai's about face on policies protecting women's rights, in 2014 women turned out in record numbers to vote and run for office, despite the danger and threats from Taliban and conservative community members who wished to keep them home. A record 308 women ran for provincial council seats and 97 won in this latest election. While there were many who protested women at the polls, other groups welcomed, protected, and encouraged them. [Quoted from the Central Asia Institute].

I often wonder how so many people can take for granted the importance of the vote, when so many people in the world are often risking their lives just to do so.

I guess I could gripe about the few @ssholes I ran into while on my way to the vote and back to my apartment, but really they're nothing compared to what women in other parts of the world face during an election. That doesn't mean that we have to take it. There's due process here to deal with @ssholes of that kind as well. Women or men, don't let anyone scare you from your right and civic duty.

Once again, thank you to the volunteers and to the Canadians at home and abroad who fought for these rights for us all, including the courageous women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces and the International Police trainers who took part in educating Afghanistan law makers and law enforcement to protect those rights.
